I published “My 3 words” for the first time back in 2015 and while I missed a couple of years, I did get back to it last year. Given my career changes this past year, I felt it more important than ever to set them out for 2023.
My 3 words was started by Chris Brogan in 2006 with the idea being that you choose three words that will guide you in the coming year. I’ve followed his posts ever since even when I didn’t publish my own. Here are Chris’ 3 words for 2023 and some background on his approach.
Before, I set out my 3 words for 2023, I wanted to take a step back and look at what I chose in 2022: Share, Teach and Bold. Without going in depth on each, I would judge myself as having delivered on Share and Bold but still not on Teach. I’ve become far more active posting on social media which was the idea behind Share and I left my job at Nokia to start my own company, Zinc Marketing, which I would say delivers on Bold. I do have some things underway on Teach so will need to continue to work on that in 2023.
But, since you can’t repeat words from last year as part of this process, here are my new ones…
My 3 words for 2023 are…
With the launch of Zinc Marketing in 2022, I realized one of my dreams. But, now I want to GROW it even bigger by helping more companies focus their marketing to get better results. But I also want to branch out into more services and areas by launching Zinc Marketing affiliates to work with companies beyond B2B technology ones and also to help people in different ways. Stay tuned for more in this area but growing the business is my top priority in 2023 so it’s only natural to make that one of my 3 words.
While sharing more on social media was one of my successful 3 words in 2022, I wanted to extend this and ENGAGE more on these platforms. I recently started connecting with more people on LinkedIn and have been overwhelmed by the response. I asked a simple question around their marketing challenges and I really appreciation all those who have agreed to provide their insights. This input will be invaluable to my blog content and several other initiatives in 2023. I look forward to even more engagement on LinkedIn and on other platforms, like Instagram, too.
I’ve always considered myself a life-long learner. Since I didn’t take marketing in school, I’ve always spent time learning new approaches and technologies throughout my career. I plan to continue this in 2023 but I also want to LEARN more about running a business. Since I started Zinc Marketing, I’ve been surprised by a few things and realize that I need to broaden my leadership and business expertise too. In 2023, I’m going to take time to learn more about running a business so if you have any recommendations, let me know.

Even though I missed a couple of years, I believe “My 3 Words” or a similar framework is a great way to guide you each year and have worked much better for me than resolutions. I encourage all of you to try this and I look forward to seeing your 3 words in action.
